A compact bush variety that can be picked young as a green bean or left on the plant to dry down for the pantry.

Sowing

Sow seeds direct about 25mm deep, as beans do not transplant well. Germination takes 6 to 10 days in warm soil, ideally between 16 and 30°C. Space seeds 10 to 15cm apart with rows 40 to 50cm apart. Sow a fresh row every three weeks for a steady supply.

When to Sow - Australian Climate Zones

Cool & Mountain: November to January

Temperate: September to February

Subtropical: February to April and July to September

Tropical: April to August (dry season)

Arid & Semi-arid: March to April and August to October

Care

Grow in full sun in free draining soil improved with compost. Beans fix their own nitrogen, so go easy on fertiliser or you will get plenty of leaf and few pods. Water deeply twice a week rather than lightly each day, keeping moisture up through flowering and pod fill. Water at soil level in the morning to reduce rust and halo blight.

Harvest

Pick green pods from about 8 weeks, when they snap cleanly and the seeds are only just showing through. Picking every second day keeps new flowers coming. For dried beans, leave the pods on the bush until they turn papery and rattle, usually around 13 to 15 weeks, then shell and dry the beans for a week before storing in a sealed jar.
