This iconic plicata features large blooms with a snowy white ground colour that carries a handsome, glossy sheen, bordered by broad, sharply defined blue-black-violet plicata edges on both standards and falls. The contrast between the pristine white centre and the vivid blue-violet edging is striking and unmistakable. A stylish ruffling across every petal enhances the flower's beauty, while the large blooms are held aloft with regal carriage on well-branched stems with ideal four-way branching. Hybridised by Schreiner and introduced in 1964, Stepping Out earned an Honourable Mention in 1965, an Award of Merit in 1967, the Nelson Award in 1968, and the Dykes Memorial Medal in 1968, with further Nelson Award wins in subsequent years. More than six decades after its introduction, Stepping Out remains a benchmark for plicata irises and continues to thrive in gardens worldwide.

Product Highlights

• Pack of 1 premium rhizome

• Flower colour: white ground plicata with broad blue-black-violet edges on standards and falls

• Bloom time: midseason to late (late spring in Australian gardens)

• Height: approximately 97 cm (38 inches) at maturity

• Dykes Memorial Medal winner 1968 (American Iris Society's highest award)

• Iconic plicata pattern with ideal four-way branching and regal carriage

• Drought tolerant and frost hardy once established

Growing Guide

Plant the rhizome in full sun and free-draining soil, with the top of the rhizome at soil level or just exposed. Space rhizomes 30 to 45 cm apart to allow good air circulation. Avoid planting too deeply and do not cover the rhizome with heavy mulch, as trapped moisture can encourage rot. In acidic soils, incorporate some lime or dolomite before planting. Water in after planting to settle the roots, then allow the soil to dry between waterings once established.
