The blooms open in the late afternoon and evening, which makes it a favourite with moths and a lovely thing to have near a back step or a seat.

Sowing

Sow seeds on the surface or barely cover with 2 to 3mm of fine soil, as light helps them germinate. Germination takes 14 to 21 days and can be slow, so keep the bed lightly moist and be patient. Thin or space plants to about 30 to 40cm apart.

When to Sow - Australian Climate Zones

Cool & Mountain: September to December

Temperate: September to November and March to April

Subtropical: March to September

Tropical: April to July (cooler, drier months)

Arid & Semi-arid: March to April and August to October

Care

Grow in full sun in free draining soil. This one is not fussy and will handle poor, sandy ground better than a rich bed, which tends to produce soft growth that flops. Water while the plants establish, after which they cope with dry spells well. Being a biennial it makes a leafy rosette in the first season and flowers in the second.

Harvest

Flowering runs through summer in the second season. Deadhead to keep the display going, or leave the pods to dry and brown on the stem if you want to collect seed.
