Green manures are fast-growing plants sown to cover bare soil. Often used in the vegetable garden, their foliage smothers weeds and their roots prevent soil erosion, improve soil health, fix nitrogen, and will improve water infiltration. When dug into the ground while still green, they return valuable nutrients to the topsoil and improve soil structure.

A diverse mix includes cowpea, buckwheat sunflower, vetch, bio-fumigated mustard (reduces fungi and nematodes), radish, lab-lab bean, fenugreek, rye, sunflower, oat, mung bean, endive, rocket, purslane, millet and soybean depending upon the availability of seeds to improve soil health and attract pollinators. This will enrich the soil with both nitrogen and organic matter.

Designed for spring sowing, but it may be sown anytime early spring through late summer to very early Autumn warmer parts of Australia.

Planting your cover crop (Prepare your own Organic Manure):

As a general guide sow in spring after all danger of frost has passed, usually mid-September; sow summer whenever good rainfall is expected; in tropical areas seeds can be sown right through the year whenever moisture is available.

In early spring, as soon as the soil begins to thaw enough to gently rake the surface, sow a generous amount of cover crop seed on your garden or raised bed soil. No need to disturb the soil with heavy digging or tilling - just simply raking the top 10mm of soil will allow enough space for the cover crop to germinate. Spring planting will yield summer flowers for cutting and crafts.

This is an excellent choice for green manure crops because they can germinate and begin growing in as little as 7 to 10 days. Within a four-week time frame, you can have a thick stock of growing “green” manure” for your soil.

Then, a few weeks before you are ready to plant your main garden stash of tomatoes, cucumbers, chillis and more, simply turn the cover crop under with a pitchfork or shovel - and plant!

It is important to let the soil rest a few weeks after turning the cover crop to allow the green manure crop to decompose a bit before throwing in your plants. So get out there and plant a garden-soil energising cover crop this Spring!

Excellent product

The packaging is really good, and I’ve had what looks like 100% success rate with the seeds sown.

Green Manure Spring/Summer

These seeds sprouted and grew very quickly in our climate (Northern Rivers NSW). The first crop was dug in and is well on the way to breaking down. The second crop has just been dug in.
I cannot yet comment on the efficacy of the crop (fertilisation and bio-fumigant properties) as
I have not yet planted a new crop (need to wait for the bio-fumigant to dissipate).

Green manure crop

Excellent mix. Sown almost six weeks ago and it’s now ready to dig in. Perfect timing for growing my new winter veggies. Mid north coast NSW.

Repeat offender

I first used this during last years wet season in my veggie patch in FNQ and was so delighted with the results applied even more over a larger area this year. Great germination and the improvement in soil condition and worm activity was remarkable. The added bonus was I just left it to grow before chopping and digging back in, meaning I didn’t waste a moment trying to grow anything else until after the Wet.

Very pleased

Hi there - I managed to secure a large plot in a community garden in Canberra and before commencing planting vegetables I decided to plant a green manure crop to improve the organic matter in the soil. I weeded the plot and sowed the green manure crop on 29 Dec. seed germination started within 5 days with complete ground cover within about two weeks. Warm sunny conditions and regular rain helped to push the green manure crop along and by last week (4 weeks after sowing) it was knee high and ready to incorporate. I am very pleased with the germination and growth rate of the crop and expect it will set me up for a good start to my new veggie plot. I have some photos that I would be happy to share, and highly recommend this product from Happy Valley Seed.
