🚨 URGENT UPDATE: 2 March 2026 - Precautionary Hold Reinstated
We are writing this update with deep frustration and sincere apology.
On 27 February 2026, our sprouting seed supplier, Australian Wheatgrass, provided us with an official clearance confirming that all sprouting seeds purchased before 2026 were safe to use. We communicated this to our customers in good faith and with great relief.
Today, 2 March 2026, Australian Wheatgrass has contacted us to reverse that clearance. They have informed us that, after further review, they made a mistake in their previous assessment and cannot guarantee that the issues affecting their 2026 stock do not also affect batches from 2024 and 2025. They are now expanding the precautionary recall to cover all stock purchased from them from 2024 to the present.
Some laboratory samples yielded inconsistent results across tests, and fresh samples have been submitted for comprehensive retesting. Australian Wheatgrass is continuing to work with the NSW Food Authority and FSANZ to resolve this matter.
It is important to note that this is the first time since the recall began on 29 January 2026 that Australian Wheatgrass has explicitly identified the timeline of affected stock. Their original advisory did not specify which production years were involved. It was only in today's communication - over four weeks into the investigation - that they confirmed the issue may extend to batches from 2024 and 2025, not just 2026 stock. This lack of clarity from the outset is a significant concern, and one we have raised directly with them.
We are extremely disappointed by this reversal. We understand how frustrating this is - particularly for those of you who reopened your packets and resumed sprouting based on the all-clear we shared last week. We share your frustration entirely.

At Happy Valley Seeds, the safety of our gardening community is our top priority. Our supplier has issued a precautionary recall for its sprouting seed products.
The Reason for This Notice
Our Australia-based specialist sprouting seed supplier has recently identified a concern about whether a seed treatment may have occurred at a point in the supply chain. At this stage, there is no laboratory evidence confirming that any treatment or contamination has taken place. However, to uphold our duty of care, we are treating this with the highest level of caution while independent testing is finalised.

Current Status: Investigation Ongoing
As of today, the investigation into certain sprouting seed products remains ongoing. Our supplier has confirmed the following:
- Lab Testing in Progress: Significant independent laboratory testing is underway to confirm the stock's safety. Until these verified results are available, it is inappropriate to provide assurances either way. We are awaiting these results to determine whether the seeds are cleared for use.
- No Confirmed Findings: At this stage, no specific contamination or hazard has been identified.
- Precautionary Approach: This action remains a proactive due diligence measure to ensure the highest safety standards.
- No Cases of Illness: There are still no confirmed cases of illness identified at this time.
- Affected Customers: We are proactively reaching out via email to all customers who purchased a potentially affected sprouting seed product in the last 90 days, from 29 January 2026. These messages contain specific safety instructions tailored to your purchase. If you have not received a safety advisory email from us, you are likely not on the current list of affected customers. Please be aware that this is an evolving investigation; as we receive additional details from our supplier, the scope of affected customers may change. We recommend checking this page regularly for the latest information.
Supplier Instructions for Customers:
- Do NOT consume any affected seed products.
- Do NOT sprout, plant, or grow any unused seeds.
- Dispose of seeds that have already been soaked, sprouted, or have started growing.
- Securely store and label any seeds that are still dry, unopened, or remaining in the packet until further notice.
We will provide a further update the moment verified laboratory results are received.
Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the specific reason for this precautionary notice?
On 29 January 2026, we received an advisory from our specialist sprouting seed supplier. They are investigating whether a seed treatment (a chemical application used in commercial farming) may have occurred at a point within the supply chain.
Note: This is currently a precautionary review. There is no laboratory evidence confirming that a treatment took place, but we have paused all use until independent testing is finalised.
2. I have already eaten the sprouts. What should I do?
- Monitor your health: There have been no confirmed reports of illness or toxicity associated with this notice.
- Stop consumption: Discontinue use of any remaining seeds or sprouts from the "Caution List" immediately.
-
Consult a professional: If you are feeling unwell or have underlying medical conditions, please consult your doctor. You can inform them that the investigation involves a potential unverified chemical seed treatment.
3. Can I feed the sprouts to my chickens, pets, or wild birds?
No. If a product is currently under investigation and deemed potentially unsafe for human consumption, it should not be fed to livestock, pets or wild birds. Please dispose of any soaked or sprouted seeds in the bin.
4. Should I throw away my dry, unopened seeds?
Not yet. Because this is a precautionary pause, the laboratory results may show an "all-clear."
- Please retain your dry seeds.
- Label them clearly as "Do Not Use."
- Store them securely until we provide the final lab findings.
5. When will the laboratory results be ready?
Per our sprouting seed supplier's email advisory, a significant independent test is underway. An expected laboratory testing report to arrive on 27 Feb 2026, subject to no further requirements.
6. Why haven't I received a refund yet?
We are currently holding refund and replacement requests until the investigation is finalised.
- If the seeds are cleared, you can use your stock as usual.
- If the seeds are confirmed as treated, we will immediately initiate a full refund or replacement process for all affected customers.
7. What happens to my order that is yet to be fulfilled?
To ensure you don't receive any potentially affected seeds, we have updated all pending orders as follows:
- If your entire order consisted of affected products, we have cancelled the order in full and issued a total refund. You should have received a notification email regarding this.
- If your order included both affected and unaffected items, we removed the affected sprouting seeds, issued a refund, and shipped the remainder of your order (e.g., standard garden vegetables, herbs, or flower seeds) so you wouldn't experience any unnecessary delays.
8. What should I do if my order is already in transit?
If your order containing affected products was shipped before this notice was issued and is currently on its way to you:
- Upon Arrival: Please do not open or use any sprouting seeds included in the package.
- Follow the Safety Protocol: Immediately label the packets "Do Not Use" and store them securely in a dry place.
- Wait for Lab Results: Follow the same process described above, do not dispose of the dry seeds yet. We will contact you with the final laboratory findings to let you know whether they are cleared for use, require a refund, or require disposal.
9. Are my other seeds (Vegetables, Herbs, Flowers, etc.) safe to use?
Absolutely, YES. This precautionary recall is strictly limited to our sprouting seed range.
All of our other products, including vegetable seeds, herb seeds, flower seeds, green manure, fruit seeds, garlic, and saffron corms, are completely unaffected and safe for your garden.
Why are they different?
- Horticulture Grade: These are horticulture-grade seeds intended for planting in soil to grow mature plants. They are not intended for direct human consumption, unlike sprouts or microgreens.
- Separate Supply Chains: These varieties come from different specialist growers and supply chains that are outside the scope of the current investigation.
You can continue to plant your garden with total confidence. We have always taken great pride in the quality and safety of the seeds we provide, and we stand firmly behind the integrity of our gardening range. Thank you for continuing to grow with us and for your ongoing trust in Happy Valley Seeds.
