If there is one bulb that engages all the senses, it is the Hyacinth. This gift bag contains 10 premium mixed Hyacinth bulbs, chosen for their bold, densely packed flower spikes and intoxicating, sweet fragrance that can fill an entire garden from late winter into spring. With a glorious mix of colours ranging from deep violet and soft pink to pure white and sky blue, this pack is one of the most rewarding and gift-worthy bulb collections available for Australian home gardeners.

Planting Instructions

Plant Hyacinth bulbs in autumn between March and June for a spectacular late winter to spring display. Choose a well-drained position in full sun to partial shade. Plant each bulb 10 to 15 cm deep with the pointy end facing up, spacing bulbs 15 to 20 cm apart to allow for good air circulation and healthy growth. Water the well after planting, then allow natural rainfall to manage moisture through the cooler months. For a concentrated display of fragrance, Hyacinths are particularly effective when planted in clusters near doorways, pathways, or outdoor entertaining areas where their scent can be fully appreciated.

Watering and Care

Natural rainfall is generally sufficient during the active growing period. During dry spells in autumn and early spring, keep the soil gently moist to support healthy bulb development. Avoid overwatering and ensure drainage is excellent at all times, as Hyacinth bulbs are highly susceptible to rot in consistently wet or waterlogged soil. Once flowering is complete and the foliage begins to yellow, reduce watering gradually.

Pruning Advice

Hyacinths make beautiful and intensely fragrant cut flowers. Cut stems low and at an angle when the lower third of the flower spike has opened for the best vase life. After blooming, remove spent flower spikes promptly to prevent the plant from setting seed and wasting energy. It is essential not to remove the leaves until they have completely yellowed and died back naturally, as the foliage is critical for replenishing the bulb's energy reserves and ensuring strong flowering the following season.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding results. Hyacinths love cold winters and perform at their very best in cool to cold climates, producing large, tightly packed flower spikes with exceptional fragrance.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Excellent and reliable performance. One of the most popular spring bulbs for temperate gardens. Plant in a sunny, well-drained position for best results.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Variable results depending on winter temperatures. For best performance, pre-chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks before planting to replicate the cold dormancy period Hyacinths require to flower well. Plant in the coolest, sunniest, and best-drained spot available.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended without artificial cold treatment. Hyacinths require a distinct cold dormancy period to develop and open flower spikes reliably.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Hyacinth plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and other animals. It is particularly important to wear gloves when handling Hyacinth bulbs, as the outer skin contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause a condition known as "Hyacinth itch," resulting in skin irritation, redness, and itching on contact. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Keep bulbs stored safely out of reach of children and pets at all times. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
