Planting Instructions

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn between April and June, once soil temperatures have cooled below 15 degrees Celsius, for the best spring flowering results. Select a position that receives full sun for at least 6 hours per day and has excellent drainage. Plant each bulb 15 to 20 cm deep with the pointy end facing up, spacing bulbs 10 to 15 cm apart. Deeper planting helps stabilise tall stems and moderates soil temperature around the bulb. Water in thoroughly after planting, then allow natural rainfall to take over through the cooler months. In warmer regions, pre-chilling bulbs before planting is strongly recommended for reliable flowering results.

Watering and Care

Water bulbs in well at planting time, then allow natural rainfall to manage moisture through autumn and winter. During unusually dry spells, keep the soil lightly moist but never wet. Excellent drainage is critical, as Tulip bulbs are highly susceptible to fungal rot in damp or poorly drained soil. Avoid overhead watering once shoots emerge, as wet foliage can encourage disease. Once flowering is complete and foliage begins to yellow, reduce watering entirely and allow the bulbs to dry out naturally.

Pruning Advice

Tulips are among the finest cut flowers available, with long straight stems and bold blooms that last 7 to 10 days in a vase. Cut stems at an angle early in the morning just as the bud begins to show colour but before it fully opens. After blooming, remove spent flower heads promptly to prevent seed formation and direct energy back into the bulb. Do not cut or remove the foliage until it has completely yellowed and died back naturally, as the leaves are vital for storing energy in the bulb for the season ahead.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding results. Tulips perform at their absolute best in cool to cold climates with cold winters and dry summers. Bulbs naturalise well and may return reliably year after year in these regions.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Very good performance with proper timing and planting depth. Choose a full sun position with excellent drainage. Bulbs may be lifted after foliage dies back, stored in a cool dry place, and replanted each season for consistent results.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Pre-chilling is essential. Chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 8 to 10 weeks before planting in June or July. Plant in the coolest, sunniest, and best-drained location available. Treat as annuals and replant with fresh pre-chilled bulbs each season for the most reliable display.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended. Tulips require a prolonged cold dormancy period that cannot be adequately replicated in tropical or arid climates without significant artificial intervention.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Tulip plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and horses. Cats are particularly sensitive to Tulip toxicity and even small amounts can cause serious illness. Handling Tulip bulbs repeatedly without gloves can cause a condition known as Tulip fingers, a form of contact dermatitis resulting in dry, cracked, and irritated skin. Always wear gloves when planting and wash hands thoroughly afterwards. Store bulbs securely out of reach of children and pets at all times. If ingestion is suspected, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
