Bring the charm of a traditional cottage garden to your backyard with Jonquil Cottage Mixed, a vibrant assortment of fragrant jonquil varieties selected for reliable performance across a wide range of Australian climates. Sweetly scented and wonderfully easy to grow, this collection delivers weeks of cheerful colour from late winter through to early spring, filling your garden with the unmistakable perfume that has made jonquils one of Australia's most beloved bulbs.

This pack contains a curated mix of Narcissus jonquilla hybrid varieties, offering a delightful range of flower forms and colours. Expect clusters of dainty blooms in shades of golden yellow, warm butter cream, and soft white, many with contrasting small cups in deeper yellow or orange tones. Each stem carries multiple flowers, creating a generous, bouquet-like display from every single bulb. The slender, rush-like foliage adds a graceful texture that complements both structured borders and informal cottage plantings.

Planting Instructions

Plant jonquil bulbs in autumn, from March onwards, once the soil has begun to cool after summer. In warmer subtropical regions, delay planting until late April or May for the best results. Choose a spot in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil enriched with compost or aged organic matter. Plant each bulb 10 to 12 cm deep and space them 10 to 15 cm apart, with the pointed end facing upwards. Water thoroughly after planting to encourage root development. In warmer climates, planting at up to double the recommended depth helps bulbs stay cool, reduces premature splitting, and promotes stronger flowering over many seasons. For a natural, cottage-style effect, plant in informal drifts rather than rigid rows.

Watering and Care

Water bulbs well at planting time, then allow the soil to remain lightly moist through the growing season without becoming waterlogged. Once buds appear, a good weekly watering will support strong blooms. After flowering has finished, continue watering until the foliage yellows and dies back naturally. Do not cut or tie the leaves prematurely, as they are busy channelling energy back into the bulb for next season's display. Apply a balanced bulb fertiliser at planting and again after flowering to support healthy multiplication.

Pruning Advice

Jonquils require minimal pruning. Remove spent flower heads after blooming to prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production. Leave the foliage intact until it has completely yellowed and died back on its own, which usually takes six to eight weeks after flowering. Once the leaves have fully withered, they can be gently pulled away or trimmed at ground level. Every three to four years, lift congested clumps after the foliage has died back, separate the bulbs, and replant them in refreshed soil to maintain vigorous flowering.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Excellent. Jonquils thrive in these conditions and will naturalise freely, returning stronger each year with very little intervention.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Excellent. This is ideal jonquil territory. Expect reliable annual flowering and steady clump expansion over many years.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Good to very good. Jonquils have lower chilling requirements than standard trumpet daffodils and often flower reliably in mild subtropical areas. In warmer locations, pre-chilling bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for four to six weeks before planting will improve results.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended for outdoor planting without cold treatment. Jonquils perform better in warm climates than standard trumpet daffodils, but still need a defined cool period for reliable flowering.

Important Warnings

All parts of the jonquil plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep bulbs stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling bulbs as the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
