Description
Jonquil Geranium (Pack of 5 Bulbs)
(Narcissus tazetta)
Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.
Jonquil Geranium is a multi-award-winning Tazetta daffodil that fills the late winter and early spring garden with colour and fragrance. Each strong, upright stem carries clusters of three to six outward-facing flowers, each adorned with pure white petals and a striking, shallow bowl-shaped orange cup that catches the light beautifully. Sweetly scented and wonderfully reliable, Geranium is a gardener's favourite for borders, naturalised plantings, containers, and cut flower arrangements.
A recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit and the American Daffodil Society Wister Award, Jonquil Geranium is one of the most celebrated Tazetta varieties in cultivation. The vivid contrast between the pristine white petals and the deep orange-red cup gives each flower a bold, cheerful character that stands out in mixed plantings. Each flower measures approximately 5 cm across, and many bulbs will produce multiple stems, forming generous bouquets directly in the garden. As a Tazetta variety, Geranium performs particularly well in warmer Australian climates where standard large-cupped daffodils may be unreliable, making it an excellent choice for gardeners from Melbourne to Brisbane.

Planting Instructions
Plant Jonquil Geranium bulbs from March onwards, once the heat of summer has passed and the soil has begun to cool. Select a position in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. Dig through some compost or aged organic matter before planting. Place each bulb 12 to 15 cm deep with the pointed tip facing upward and space bulbs 10 to 15 cm apart. For the best visual impact, plant in clusters of at least five bulbs. In warmer regions, planting at up to double the recommended depth helps keep bulbs cool and promotes healthier, longer-lasting clumps. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and stimulate root growth, then withhold further watering until foliage emerges.
Watering and Care
Water Geranium regularly once the foliage appears, aiming for a deep weekly soak during the active growing and flowering period. Well-drained soil is essential, as waterlogged conditions can cause bulb rot. After the flowers have finished, continue watering while the foliage is green, as this is when the bulb stores energy for the following year. Once the leaves begin to yellow and die back, reduce watering and allow the bulbs to dry out during their summer dormancy. Avoid irrigating the planting area heavily over summer if possible.
Pruning Advice
Deadhead spent blooms promptly to conserve the bulb's energy reserves. Allow the foliage to remain in place for at least six weeks after the last flower has faded, letting it die back naturally. Do not cut, tie, or braid the leaves during this period. Once the foliage has completely yellowed and collapsed, it can be removed. Every three to four years, lift congested clumps after the foliage has died back, separate the bulbs, and replant in freshly prepared soil to maintain vigorous flowering.
Climate Zone Guide
Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Excellent results. Cold winters provide natural chilling for strong spring flowering. Geranium is fully frost hardy and thrives in these conditions.
Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Outstanding performance. This is the sweet spot for Tazetta varieties, and Geranium will naturalise reliably over many years with minimal care.
Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Very good results. Jonquils outperform standard daffodils in warm climates. Plant deeper and provide morning sun with some afternoon shade protection.
Important Warnings
All parts of the Jonquil Geranium plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep bulbs stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling bulbs as the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately. When cutting flowers for indoor display, place stems in their own vase for at least 12 hours before mixing with other cut flowers, as jonquils release a latex sap that can clog the stems of other blooms.
