Description
Lawtonberry (Pack of 1 cane)
Rubus philadelphicus (NOT to WA, TAS)
Lawtonberries, the first widely cultivated variety of blackberries in the United States, have a long history of delighting berry lovers. They are often referred to as Seacor's Mammoth, which is a plum-coloured berry known for its sweet flavour and versatility in the kitchen.
- Large Berries: Lawtonberries produce large, gorgeous berries that grow to about 3cm long.
- Heavy Cropping: They are heavy-cropping plants, providing abundant delicious fruit.
- Sweet Flavour: Enjoy the berries right from the plant or use them in jams, pies, and desserts. They are especially popular for making jams.
- Long History: Lawtonberries have been grown commercially in the USA for almost 200 years.
Growing and Harvesting Lawtonberries
- Ripening: Allow the berries to ripen fully on the cane for the best flavour. Although slightly smaller than typical blackberries, they pack a flavourful punch.
- Harvest Time: You can pick your fruit regularly from December to February on established canes.
- Usage: Eat the berries fresh from the bush or use them in cooking for jams, pies, and sauces.
Plant Care Tips
- Support: The canes are semi-erect and should be supported on a trellis for optimal growth. Train them up and down the trellis, weaving them through the wires.
- Pruning: Top prune in summer to encourage branching. Remove old canes in winter as they fruit on one-year-old wood.
- Self-Fertile: Lawtonberries are self-fertile, meaning you only need one plant to get started, though you might wish you had more come harvest time!
Planting Instructions
- Location: Plant Lawtonberries in full sun in humus-rich, well-drained soil.
- Spacing: Space the plants 150-180 cm apart to ensure enough room to grow.
- Depth: Plant the canes quite shallowly, around 10 cm deep.
- Watering: Water the plants when in flower and fruit, and keep the soil moist.
- Mulching: Add mulch to help with water retention and weed reduction.
- Sun Protection: Protect the plants from hot afternoon sun to prevent damage.
