Description

Tulip Ile De France (Pack of 8 Bulbs) (Tulipa Ile De France)

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

Classic, reliable, and boldly beautiful, Tulip Ile De France is one of the most celebrated red Triumph tulips in the world. This pack contains 8 premium Tulipa Ile De France bulbs, each producing a tall, stately bloom in a rich, pure scarlet-red that catches the light magnificently and holds its colour and form across the full flowering period. The Triumph classification means Ile De France produces strong, wind-resistant stems of 45 to 55 cm, making it one of the best tulips for cutting as well as for dramatic garden display. The flowers open from a classic upright bud into a broad, rounded cup shape, the quintessential image of the tulip at its most perfect.

Planting Instructions

Plant tulip bulbs in late autumn between May and June for a mid-spring display. In cool and temperate Australian climates, plant bulbs directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a full sun position. Plant each bulb 15 to 20 cm deep with the flat base facing down and the pointed tip upward, spacing 10 to 15 cm apart. In subtropical and warmer regions (Brisbane and above), pre-chill bulbs in the refrigerator at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks before planting, keeping them away from fruit. Do not store bulbs near apples or other ethylene-producing fruits as this will destroy flowering potential.

Watering and Care

Water in after planting and allow natural rainfall to handle the majority of irrigation through the cooler months. Avoid overwatering or waterlogged soil, as tulip bulbs are highly susceptible to fungal rot in persistently wet conditions. A light application of a balanced bulb fertiliser at planting time supports strong stem development. Tulips in Australia are best treated as annual or biennial plants; while some will return, performance typically declines from the second season onward and most gardeners replant with fresh stock each year.

Note: When handling tulip bulbs, wear gloves. The fine hairs on tulip bulbs can cause a mild skin irritation known as tulip fingers in sensitive individuals. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling.

Pruning Advice

Ile De France is an outstanding cut flower tulip. Cut stems early in the morning when the buds are still closed or just beginning to open, cutting at a sharp angle near the base of the stem. Flowers will continue to open and develop in the vase. Remove spent flowers from garden plants promptly. As tulips are generally treated as annual plantings in Australian conditions, foliage can be removed once it has fully yellowed.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Excellent. Cold winters provide ideal natural chilling, producing tall, strong stems and vibrant scarlet blooms with outstanding performance.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Good results in most seasons. Pre-chill bulbs for 4 to 6 weeks in warmer temperate areas to ensure consistent flowering. Plant in the sunniest, best-drained position available.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Achievable with diligent pre-chilling for 6 to 8 weeks at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius. Treat it as an annual for the best results. Ile De France is among the more heat-tolerant Triumph tulips.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended for outdoor planting without sustained cold treatment. Very limited viability without refrigeration.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Tulip plant are toxic to humans and animals, with the bulbs being the most toxic. Keep all tulip material away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling bulbs to avoid tulip fingers, a mild skin irritation caused by calcium oxalate crystals found in the outer skin. Wash your hands thoroughly after planting. Seek medical or veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected.
