Description

Tulip Kingsblood (Pack of 2 Bulbs) (Tulipa Kingsblood)

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

Stately, deeply coloured, and utterly classic, Tulip Kingsblood is one of the finest deep red single late tulips available for Australian home gardens. This pack contains 2 premium Tulipa Kingsblood bulbs, each producing a large, elegant bloom in a rich, glowing cherry-red with a subtle silvery-rose sheen on the outer petals that adds depth and lustre to the colour as the flower matures and opens. Growing to 55 to 65 cm on strong upright stems, Kingsblood is one of the tallest and most stately of the single late tulip group, making it an outstanding choice for the back of spring borders, formal cutting gardens, and large container displays.

Planting Instructions

Plant tulip bulbs in late autumn between May and June. Choose a full sun position with excellent drainage. Plant 15 to 20 cm deep, flat base down, pointed end upward, spacing 10 to 15 cm apart. In subtropical and warmer temperate regions (Brisbane and above), pre-chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks before planting. Keep refrigerated bulbs away from apples and other ethylene-producing fruit. As a single late variety, Kingsblood blooms after most early and mid-season tulips, making it ideal for extending the spring tulip display.

Watering and Care

Water in after planting and allow natural rainfall to provide moisture through winter. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which quickly lead to fungal rot in tulip bulbs. Tulips are best treated as annual plants in Australian conditions, with fresh bulbs replanted each autumn for consistent performance. Wear gloves when handling bulbs to avoid mild skin irritation from the outer bulb hairs.

Pruning Advice

Kingsblood is an outstanding long-stemmed cut flower tulip. Cut in the morning when buds are just beginning to colour. The tall stems are particularly effective in large, statement arrangements. Remove spent flowers from garden plantings promptly. As tulips are treated as annual plantings in most Australian regions, foliage can be cleared once it turns yellow.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding. Long, cold winters produce the tall stems and vivid deep colour for which Kingsblood is renowned.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Good to excellent. Pre-chill in warmer temperate areas for reliable blooming.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Pre-chill for 6 to 8 weeks. Treat as annuals. Kingsblood is among the more reliable late-season tulips in warmer climates.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended without sustained artificial cold treatment.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Tulip plant are toxic if ingested by humans and animals. Bulbs are the most toxic part. Keep all tulip material away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling to avoid skin irritation from the fine bulb hairs. Wash hands thoroughly after planting. Seek medical or veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected.
