Luffa Gourd - Smooth Extra Long seeds

Luffa cylindrica Syn. Luffa aegyptiaca
Packet: 5 seeds, 10g, 25g

The huge, vigorous type produces extra-long gourds up to 15 per plant. The skin is green, and the fruit has a distinctive flavour. Fruit can weigh up to 450g and be 80cm x 4cm. Luffa sponges may be made from fruit that has been allowed to fully mature on the vine.

How to germinate gourd seeds:

  1. The seed coat is hard; soak your gourd seeds overnight (room temperature or lukewarm water) to speed up germination. Or gently clip the seed tip to help the seed germinate
  2. Thoroughly soak a paper towel and place it at the bottom of your container.
  3. Drain your soaked seeds and wrap them in your wet paper towel.
  4. Cover the container and place it in a warm place.
  5. You should see your results in 4-6 days.
  6. Follow the rest of the process for plant growth and harvest.

Gourds are easy to grow and require little maintenance. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring after frost or early summer. Choose a warm & sunny location. Keep soil moist. In hot climates, the gourds may require additional water and fertilizer applications. Hand pollination may be necessary in some cases. Train your gourds to climb vertical support to promote better air circulation, better produce positioning, and simplified harvesting. When the leaves begin to yellow, and the fruit has reached full size, your gourds are ready to pick. Remove fruits from the vine using a sharp knife or pruning shears after removing a few centimetres of the stem. When the fruit is ripe, it will fall from the vine by itself. Allow four to six weeks of ripening before harvesting if you are after a luffa sponge.

    Shipping Restrictions

Western Australia Customers: We can ship most seed line items, except Quarantine WA restricted seed lines to WA. To help us ship your order as quickly and efficiently as possible, please do not include any seed items prohibited in WA; they are listed with the label 'NOT to WA'. Due to quarantine restrictions in WA, there is a 10kg seeds limit per variety. WA orders require additional handling time. Please remain within an approved limit when ordering seeds. We review every WA order before dispatch and remove (or reduce) excess seed quantity from your order to comply with WA biosecurity regulations. Please check further information here

Tasmania Customers: We can ship seeds to Tasmania. Please do not include seed line items labeled 'NOT to TAS'. Please note that the maximum allowable limit per permitted seed line item is 1kg per order.
