Description

Anemone Cottage Blue (Pack of 12 Bulbs)

Anemone coronaria (NOT to WA, TAS)

If you're looking for a vibrant addition to your garden or a stunning choice for cut flowers, consider the Anemone. This hardy plant features rich blue flowers and requires minimal maintenance. For the best results, Plant Anemones in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

  • Location: Anemones thrive when mass-planted in sunny areas. While they're tough enough to handle various conditions, they do benefit from some protection against the wind.
  • Timing: Expect Anemones to bloom 10-15 weeks after planting. Growth may be slower in cooler temperatures. In most parts of Australia, the ideal time to plant is in autumn for spring blooms. In cooler climates, you can plant them in spring for late summer or autumn flowers. Keep them sheltered from the hot afternoon sun to ensure longevity in these areas. If you live in a tropical region, plant them in winter.
  • Soil: Anemones prefer well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. If your soil is heavy clay, add compost to improve drainage. Before planting, work some slow-release fertiliser into the soil to support healthy growth.
  • Planting Depth and Spacing: Planting depth for Anemones depends on the variety. Generally, place corms 2-3 times their width deep in the soil. For example, a corm that's 3cm wide should be planted around 6-9cm deep. Space Anemones about 10-15cm apart to allow room for them to grow.
  • Watering: Water your Anemones regularly, but make sure not to over-water. They prefer moderate moisture levels and can tolerate dry periods once established.
  • Maintenance: Once Anemones start blooming, remove spent flowers regularly to encourage new growth and prolong the flowering period. In colder climates, you may need to lift corms after the first frost and store them in a cool, dry place until the following season. In warmer climates, you can leave them in the ground and cut back foliage after it has died.
  • Pests and Diseases: Anemones are relatively pest—and disease-free. However, they may be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soil. Watch for slugs and snails, which may feed on young shoots.
  • Uses: Anemones are versatile plants that can be used in various ways. They make excellent cut flowers, adding colour to any bouquet or arrangement. They also add interest and texture to garden beds, borders, and containers.
