Description

CORN, Maize – Silvermine - 20 seeds, 100g (NOT to WA, TAS & NT)

112 days to maturity — 'Silvermine' corn is an old dent variety which is a little earlier than other white corn variety, with somewhat smaller ears but usually deeper grains. The ears grow about 25cm long and have fourteen to sixteen rows of large, white kernels. 'Silvermine' can be used as a roasting corn variety, and is also excellent for grits, meal, and animal feed.

It is grown in Australia and this is NOT a hybrid or GMO variety.

Corn Growing Instructions & Care

Corn can be sown in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Successive plantings are possible to extend the harvest until January in most areas in Australia.

Sow direct, 20mm-30mm deep in Spring or early Summer. Plant spacing is 30cm and row spacing is 75cm. It needs full sun and moist soil. Frost tender plant, matures in approx.112 days, grows to 2m high.

Block planting improves pollination and gives well-filled cobs. Prepare the soil with compost and well-rotted manure. Count 18 days from when the silk appears and start checking for ripeness, the kernel should be milky.

Be aware that the corns in the supermarket are hybrids. Open-pollinated "Heirloom" corns have a more complex flavour, not so sugary, and shorter shelf life. For the best eating, watch the cobs carefully. When the juice in the kernels is clear, the corn is not ready. When it gets milky, the corn is ready to eat. Pick while the juice is milky, not yet pasty. Cook as fast as you can after picking.

Tracking (if any) is activated after inspection, which may take up to 10 business days from our packing date. Delivery within WA generally takes an additional 1 to 5 business days after release from Perth Airport.

  • Tasmania, add $3 per order for Biosecurity paperwork. Maximum 1 kg per seed line item. Biosecurity Tasmania restrictions apply.

Corn Maze seeds

Unlike sweet corn, these seeds grow differently. Almost 100% strike, they are now about 3 meters tall, all have a flower at the top. Some are starting to form ears, one plant is forming two ears, but it looks like I have to wait at lest another month before all plants have ears. You have to careful of the wind, because the plants are so tall, they get blown over easily. I built a wind brake around the patch out of shade cloth, this works well. Very strong plants, but my biggest problem was the wind, but seems ok now after building wind brake.
I recommend these seeds as 100% germination, but I have to wait to try the cobs.

Unfortunate rust

Haven’t harvested yet , not first time growing corn however first time growing this variety. I made a brand new bed with brand new soil and Unfortunately this corn is my first experience with rust on corn. No sure if it’s the quality of seeds or an existing problem in the soil l bought however but a few stalks have been affected.
