Description

Crinum Pink (Pack of 1 Bulb)

Crinum x powellii

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

Crinum Pink (Crinum x powellii) is a bold and beautiful large-bulb perennial, producing clusters of soft to deep pink funnel-shaped flowers on stout stems through the warmest months of the year. Each stem carries six to eight fragrant blooms in succession, and established plants produce multiple flower stems in a single season, giving a long and generous display from late spring through to autumn. The broad, arching, strap-like foliage is a feature in its own right and remains attractive year-round in warm climates.

Crinum x powellii is a naturally occurring hybrid that has been cultivated in Australian gardens since the Victorian era. It is one of the most adaptable and long-lived of all flowering bulbs, capable of persisting and naturalising in positions that would challenge less robust plants. The pink form is particularly popular for its warm, cottage-garden colour that blends beautifully with white-flowering companions and ornamental grasses.

Planting Instructions

Plant Crinum Pink bulbs in spring or early summer in a position with full sun or part shade. Generous spacing of at least 40 to 60 cm between bulbs is recommended, as established plants spread considerably over time. Set the bulb neck at or just below soil level. Crinums are tolerant of heavier soils than most bulbs, including clay with reasonable drainage. In cooler climates, choose a warm, north-facing microclimate near a wall or fence to provide shelter from frost.

Watering and Care

Water regularly through spring and summer to support flowering. Crinum Pink is more moisture-tolerant than many other autumn bulbs, but dislikes prolonged waterlogging. Reduce irrigation in winter as growth slows. A balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring will improve flower stem production. Remove spent flower stems at the base, but leave foliage intact at all times, as it is evergreen and essential for ongoing bulb vigour.

After Flowering

Remove spent flower stems promptly at the base to encourage further stems to develop. Established clumps can remain undisturbed for decades. Division is rarely needed, but if plants become congested, divide in late winter using a sharp spade, ensuring each division has healthy roots attached. Freshly divided plants may take a season or two to re-establish before flowering fully resumes.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Marginal - choose a sheltered, warm position; protect from hard frost

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Reliable performer in sheltered, warm spots

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Excellent - fully at home in warm, humid summers

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Performs well in tropical gardens with adequate soil moisture

Important Warnings

All parts of the Crinum plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep bulbs stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling bulbs as the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
