Dahlia Black Wonder (Dahlia hybrid) features striking burgundy velvet blooms that bring elegance to any garden. These Dahlias are known for their symmetrical, waterlily-like flowers. With semi-double blooms and delicately curved petals forming a shallow, airy cup, they deliver a refined and graceful charm to your garden space.
Dahlias are excellent garden plants that flower for a long time, have lush foliage, come in many colours and shapes, and are easy to care for. They are generous with their flowers, making them great for garden display and cutting to fill your vases.
When to Plant
Hold off planting your dahlia tubers until the soil warms up, usually from mid-spring to late Spring, depending on where you live.
How to Plant Dahlias
- Choose the Right Spot: Dahlias need at least six hours of sun to flower well. The morning sun is best, as the hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.
- Prepare the Soil: Plant them in moist, rich, well-drained soil. Before planting, mix some well-rotted cow or sheep manure into the soil.
- Planting Depth: Plant the tuber about 5-10 cm deep.
- Stake Tall Varieties: For tall or large-flowered varieties, stake them at planting time to avoid disturbing the roots later.
- Spacing: Leave space between the plants to allow for good airflow.
Caring for Your Dahlias
- Watering: You do not need to water immediately after planting. However, once the plants start growing above ground, keep the soil moist.
- Fertilising: Add a slow-release fertiliser and some sulphate of potash in early summer. Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture.
- Cutting Flowers: Dahlia flowers are excellent for cutting and last well in a vase. Cut them in the morning when they have higher moisture content. Cut the stems so you take at least two leaves, encouraging more flowers and bushy growth. Remove any spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms.
Long-Term Care
If your soil is well-drained and doesn't freeze or get too wet in winter, dahlia tubers can stay in the ground year-round (known as perennialising).

Important for WA Express
We do not provide Express parcel service for WA orders because Quarantine inspection delays delivery, which defeats the purpose of Express.
State Specific Requirements and Fees

Western Australia, add $6 per order for Quarantine inspection. All WA seed orders go to Quarantine WA for inspection. Tracking is activated after inspection, which may take up to 10 business days from our packing date. Delivery within WA generally takes an additional 1 to 5 business days after release from Perth Airport.

Tasmania, add $3 per order for Biosecurity paperwork. Maximum 1 kg per seed line item. Biosecurity Tasmania restrictions apply.
Tracking and Delivery

You will receive a dispatch email with a tracking number when your order ships from our warehouse. Some small-value orders may ship as untracked letters.

Signature on delivery is available. Add $3.95. If not selected, the carrier may leave the parcel in a safe place, your letterbox if it fits, or at a collection point. ID may be required for Registered or Signature services.

If your order is lost or damaged in transit, we will work with you on a fair resolution, which may include a full refund, an upgrade to tracked delivery at a subsidised rate, or a one-time replacement. If we resend an order, that replacement is final and is sent at your own risk. No further refund or replacement will be provided.

Shipping Restriction for WA Customers: To help us ship your order as quickly and efficiently as possible, please do not include any seed items prohibited in WA; they are listed with the label 'NOT to WA'. Due to quarantine restrictions in WA, there is a 10kg seeds limit per variety. WA orders require additional handling time. Please remain within an approved limit when ordering seeds. We review every WA order before dispatch and remove (or reduce) excess seed quantity from your order to comply with WA biosecurity regulations. Please check further information here
