Description
**RARE** - IMMORTALITY VINE Seeds
NOTE: Jiaogulan seeds are notorious for erratic germination. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is the most difficult, Jiogulan seeds are rated around 9 for germination difficulty. Since these seeds are RARE and we have a minimal supply, we will neither refund nor replace seeds if you are unhappy with the germination results.
Gynostemma pentaphyllum - Jiaogulan - 9 Seeds - ADAPTOGEN
Gynostemma pentaphyllum, also called Jiaogulan, is indigenous to the southern reaches of China, northern Vietnam, southern Korea, and Japan. Jiaogulan is best known as a herbal medicine reputed to have powerful antioxidant and adaptogenic effects purported to increase longevity.
Pharmacological research has indicated several therapeutic properties of Jiaogulan, including lowering cholesterol and high blood pressure, strengthening immunity, and inhibiting cancer growth.
Additionally, Jiaogulan contains THREE TIMES MORE effective compounds like those found in Panax ginseng, known as one of the healthiest and most expensive plants on earth. So, don't waste your money on expensive, often chemically treated herbs. Better buy some seeds and grow your own medicinal herbs, 100% organically!
- A very famous and healthy medicinal plant. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Known as the immortality herb
- Jiaogulan contains four saponins identical to those in Panax ginseng, as well as seventeen other similar saponins
- Other Synonyms: five-leaf ginseng, poor man's ginseng, miracle grass, fairy herb, sweet tea vine, gospel herb, Southern Ginseng
DISCLAIMER:
Happy Valley Seeds wishes to be completely transparent with you about Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) seeds, as they are among the most challenging to germinate successfully, even for experienced growers.
Jiaogulan seeds are notoriously erratic and problematic for several reasons:
- Naturally low germination rates: Even under optimal conditions, professional growers typically achieve only 30-50% germination rates. This is a characteristic of the species itself, not seed quality.
- Built-in dormancy mechanisms: Seeds have natural germination inhibitors that evolved to prevent premature germination. This makes them extremely unpredictable.
- Rapid viability loss: These seeds lose viability much faster than most species, even under ideal storage conditions.
- Very specific requirements: They need consistent soil temperatures of 20-25°C, high humidity (70-80%), and complete darkness initially, and may take 2-8 weeks to germinate, if they do.
- Scarification often needed: Many growers find that lightly scarifying (gently rubbing with fine sandpaper) or cold stratifying (refrigerating in a moist medium for 2-4 weeks) improves results, though still no guarantee.
Jiaogulan seeds are rare, expensive to source, and have very low commercial availability. The 10-11 seeds per packet reflect the premium nature and scarcity of these seeds in the market. Occasionally, the "dust" you notice in the packet is likely chaff from the seed-cleaning process, which is completely normal.
What professional growers do:
- Sow ALL seeds, expecting only a 30-50% success rate at best
- Use bottom heat (heat mats) to maintain consistent warmth
- Keep in complete darkness until germination
- Maintain very high humidity with plastic covers
- Be patient, germination can take up to 2 months
- Many resort to purchasing established plants instead due to seed difficulty
Given the inherent challenges with Jiaogulan seed germination, which affects all suppliers, not just us, you might find more success with purchasing an established plant from a nursery and propagating through cuttings, which is actually how most Jiaogulan is commercially grown.

Shipping Restrictions
Western Australia Customers: We can ship most seed line items, except Quarantine WA restricted seed lines to WA. To help us ship your order as quickly and efficiently as possible, please do not include any seed items prohibited in WA; they are listed with the label 'NOT to WA'. Due to quarantine restrictions in WA, there is a 10kg seeds limit per variety. WA orders require additional handling time. Please remain within an approved limit when ordering seeds. We review every WA order before dispatch and remove (or reduce) excess seed quantity from your order to comply with WA biosecurity regulations. Please check further information here
Tasmania Customers: We can ship seeds to Tasmania. Please do not include seed line items labeled 'NOT to TAS'. Please note that the maximum allowable limit per permitted seed line item is 1kg per order.
