KOMATSUNA Red Leaf F1 – 50 Seeds (Hybrid)
Tasty deep red-leaved Mustard Spinach. Excellent addition to baby leaf salads and lightly sautéed in stir fry dishes. The tender round leaves are purplish-red top side and green with red veins underneath on upright bright green stems. Easy to harvest as cut and come again. Sow from spring through to early autumn for continuous harvest maturing in 21-40 days. A small number of plants may have green leaves. Maturity 60 days from direct sowing.
Komatsuna gets its name from the Komatsugawa district, which includes Edogawa, Katsushika and Adachi wards. Tokyo was the second-largest regional producer of komatsuna in 2004. It is also called spinach mustard, Komatsuna has dark red leaves that are rich in calcium and often quite glossy. They can be harvested at any stage and prepared like spinach in the early stages and more like cabbage as they mature.
The flavour grows stronger and hotter the longer the leaves mature. This versatile green can be stir-fried, pickled, boiled and added to soups or used fresh in salads.
How to Grow Komatsuna
Growing komatsuna in a home garden is not too difficult. It is a biennial plant that is tolerant of very cold temperatures as well as heat (but extreme heat may cause it to bolt).
The komatsuna plants can be grown throughout the year. But they are most often grown in the spring and autumn because the plants cannot endure extreme heat or cold for more than a short time.
You can either sow the seeds directly in the garden or start the seeds early indoors. Taking additional care will help the plants to grow better. The komatsuna plants generally require a high amount of nitrogen. So you will need to amend the soil with compost and use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer as the plants mature (blood meal is a very good source of nitrogen).
You don’t have to water the komatsuna plants too often. Because the plants are drought tolerant.
The good thing about growing komatsuna is that ‘you can actually harvest the leaves at any stage and can be snipped one at a time or the entire head can be taken. Harvesting leaves will be good. Because the plants will regrow and extend the length of time you can harvest if you harvest the leaves only. Plant small areas in succession, for a continuous supply year-round.

Important for WA Express
We do not provide Express parcel service for WA orders because Quarantine inspection delays delivery, which defeats the purpose of Express.

Western Australia, add $6 per order for Quarantine inspection. All WA seed orders go to Quarantine WA for inspection. Tracking (if any) is activated after inspection, which may take up to 10 business days from our packing date. Delivery within WA generally takes an additional 1 to 5 business days after release from Perth Airport.

Tasmania, add $3 per order for Biosecurity paperwork. Maximum 1 kg per seed line item. Biosecurity Tasmania restrictions apply.
Tracking and Delivery

You will receive a dispatch email with a tracking number when your order ships from our warehouse. Some small-value orders may ship as untracked letters.

Signature on delivery is available. Add $3.95. If not selected, the carrier may leave the parcel in a safe place, your letterbox if it fits, or at a collection point. ID may be required for Registered or Signature services.

If your order is lost or damaged in transit, we will work with you on a fair resolution, which may include a full refund, an upgrade to tracked delivery at a subsidised rate, or a one-time replacement. If we resend an order, that replacement is final and is sent at your own risk. No further refund or replacement will be provided.

Western Australia Customers: We can ship most seed line items, except Quarantine WA restricted seed lines to WA. To help us ship your order as quickly and efficiently as possible, please do not include any seed items prohibited in WA; they are listed with the label 'NOT to WA'. Due to quarantine restrictions in WA, there is a 10kg seeds limit per variety. WA orders require additional handling time. Please remain within an approved limit when ordering seeds. We review every WA order before dispatch and remove (or reduce) excess seed quantity from your order to comply with WA biosecurity regulations. Please check further information here
