Description

Pigeon Pea seeds

Cajanus cajan
Pack: 10 seeds, 10g, 25g, 100g, 250g, 1kg

It is also known as pigeon pea, red gram, tur, pwa kongo in Haiti, or as gungo peas in Jamaica; it is a perennial legume from the family Fabaceae.

Since its domestication in the Indian subcontinent at least 3,500 years ago, its seeds have become common in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

It is consumed on a vast scale in South Asia and is a major source of protein for the population of the Indian subcontinent. It is the primary accompaniment to rice or roti (flatbread) and has a staple diet throughout the length and breadth of India.

This Pigeon Pea is an Open Pollinated variety. The plant produces high yields of flavorful pigeon peas. Pigeon Peas can be served like green peas or cowpeas, combining them with other vegetables. Most pigeon peas are harvested in the dry stage and marketed as dried peas. This variety will succeed under hot growing conditions.

Pigeon peas are remarkably drought-resistant, tolerating dry areas. An excellent choice for home gardens and market growers. A variety from India.

Care & Growing Instructions: Prefer to sow directly after frost in Spring and Summer. This is a heat-loving plant that will not tolerate cold nights during germination. Germination temperature is between 25°C and 28°C (germination period: 14-21 days); therefore, using a greenhouse and a heating mat is recommended if you live in a cold or temperate climate zone. The plants need fresh, well-fertilised, permeable soil. They should be planted in a sunny, protected place with at least 6 hours of sunlight - preferably more.  Soak seeds overnight in water before sowing and sow 25mm deep, 30cm apart - Harvest in 90-120 days

Important for WA Express
We do not provide Express parcel service for WA orders because Quarantine inspection delays delivery, which defeats the purpose of Express.

State Specific Requirements and Fees

  • Western Australia, add $6 per order for Quarantine inspection. All WA seed orders go to Quarantine WA for inspection. Tracking (if any) is activated after inspection, which may take up to 10 business days from our packing date. Delivery within WA generally takes an additional 1 to 5 business days after release from Perth Airport.

  • Tasmania, add $3 per order for Biosecurity paperwork. Maximum 1 kg per seed line item. Biosecurity Tasmania restrictions apply.

Tracking and Delivery

  • You will receive a dispatch email with a tracking number when your order ships from our warehouse. Some small-value orders may ship as untracked letters.

  • Signature on delivery is available. Add $3.95. If not selected, the carrier may leave the parcel in a safe place, your letterbox if it fits, or at a collection point. ID may be required for Registered or Signature services.

Delivery Timeframes and Late or Missing Orders

  • Dispatch and delivery times are estimates. Events outside our control, such as weather or carrier delays, can affect timing.

  • We use Australia Post guidelines to decide when an order is considered late or missing.

Shipping Restrictions

Western Australia Customers: We can ship most seed line items, except Quarantine WA restricted seed lines to WA. To help us ship your order as quickly and efficiently as possible, please do not include any seed items prohibited in WA; they are listed with the label 'NOT to WA'. Due to quarantine restrictions in WA, there is a 10kg seeds limit per variety. WA orders require additional handling time. Please remain within an approved limit when ordering seeds. We review every WA order before dispatch and remove (or reduce) excess seed quantity from your order to comply with WA biosecurity regulations. Please check further information here

I have planted fenugreek and awaiting maturity of leaves for consumption. The sprouting and growth has been good so far since l had planted in winter. The coming should enhance the growth.
I planted the pigeon peas today since no rain has been forecast and temperatures will move towards mid twenty centigrade.
I have not planted the Alfalfa.

Great service, thank you.

Happy Valley Seeds give a reliable and valuable service.
It's too cold to plant the Pigeon Pea seeds at the moment, but I'm sure they will be good.

pigeon pea

too early to write a review but I got them fast as last year they were not available when I wanted them. An amazing plant and if it grows the way it should it will be a blessing for me and my chooks. If you want them grab them now, as they don't last long with people buying them due to the poultry feed hike in costs due to shortage of food/grains. You will love them, so will your chooks or what evers.

pigeon pea seeds and postage

Thank you for my order. For some reason only half of the seeds germinated. Really not sure why. Also I received a ‘postage owed’ sticker on the packet from Australia Post with my order. I sent a messenger message that day but haven’t heard anything back from Happy Valley. Thank you.
