Description

Daffodil Rainbow Mixed (Pack of 16 Bulbs) (Narcissus hybrid (mixed varieties))

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

For gardeners who want an abundant, joyful spring display across a large area, the Daffodil Rainbow Mixed pack of 16 bulbs is an excellent choice. This generous pack contains a diverse selection of Narcissus varieties spanning the full colour spectrum of the daffodil world, from classic golden-yellow trumpet daffodils and creamy white large-cups through to warm apricot bi-colours, soft pink-cupped varieties, and small-cupped contrast types. Planting 16 bulbs in a single location creates an immediate, naturalistic drift of colour that continues to expand and evolve with each passing season as individual varieties multiply at their own pace.

Planting Instructions

Plant bulbs in autumn between March and June. For a naturalistic drift effect, scatter the 16 bulbs loosely across the intended planting area and plant each where it lands, adjusting for spacing of 8 to 12 cm between bulbs. Planting depth is 10 to 15 cm with the pointed end upward. This pack is well-suited to mass planting across garden beds, along pathways, or naturalistic lawn areas where the bulbs can be left undisturbed to multiply. Water in well after planting.

Watering and Care

Rainfall is the primary water source for naturalised daffodil plantings. In dry autumn conditions, supplement lightly to assist root establishment. Avoid waterlogging, which is the main cause of bulb failure in Australian gardens. For large-scale plantings, a broad-area application of a low-nitrogen bulb fertiliser in autumn and again in late winter supports healthy growth across all varieties in the mix.

Pruning Advice

The mix provides cut flowers across a wide range of forms and colours, making it an excellent source of long-lasting spring arrangements for several weeks. Cut as individual varieties come into bloom. Remove spent flower heads as each variety finishes. Allow all foliage across the entire planting to die back naturally before removing or mowing, as premature removal weakens the bulbs for the following season.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding for all varieties in the mix. Cold winters provide ideal conditions for vigorous growth and vivid flower colour across the full range.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Excellent. The Rainbow Mixed naturalises freely in temperate conditions, building into increasingly spectacular drifts over successive seasons.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Pre-chill all bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks before autumn planting. Not all varieties in the mix will perform equally well in warmer climates, but the majority will flower with adequate pre-chilling.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended for outdoor planting without artificial cold treatment.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Daffodil plant are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Bulbs carry the highest alkaloid concentration. Wear gloves when handling. Wash your hands thoroughly after planting. Keep away from children and pets. Seek immediate medical or veterinary advice if ingestion is suspected.
