Description

Ranunculi Dark Secrets Mixed (Pack of 12 Bulbs) (Ranunculus asiaticus (dark colour series, mixed))

Please Note: These corms cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

For gardeners drawn to the dramatic, moody end of the spring colour palette, Ranunculi Dark Secrets Mixed is a collection of genuine distinction. This pack contains 12 corms selected from dark-toned ranunculus varieties, encompassing near-black, deep burgundy, rich dark plum, inky violet, and deep blood-red tones. The multi-petalled Persian buttercup form means that these dark colours are expressed across dozens of layered petals, creating a flower of remarkable depth and jewel-like intensity. Dark-toned ranunculus are among the most sought-after flowers by florists and interior designers, and this mixed pack is ideal for gardeners who want to bring that sophisticated, editorial quality to their own garden.

Planting Instructions

Ranunculus corms are planted in autumn between March and May for a winter-to-spring flowering display. Before planting, soak corms in water for 2 to 4 hours until they plump up slightly - this rehydrates them after storage and dramatically improves establishment. Plant corms 5 to 8 cm deep with the claw-like fingers pointing downward, spacing 10 to 15 cm apart. Choose a sunny position with excellent drainage; ranunculus will not tolerate waterlogged soil. Water in gently after planting.

Watering and Care

Ranunculus prefer consistent moisture during their active growing season, but must never sit in waterlogged soil. Water regularly through winter and spring, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. A balanced fertiliser applied at planting time and again as flower buds begin to form supports strong, multi-stemmed plants loaded with blooms. As temperatures rise in late spring, plants will naturally die back. Reduce watering and allow the corms to rest through summer.

Pruning Advice

Ranunculus are outstanding cut flowers and among the best value blooms available from the home garden, with each corm producing multiple stems across an 8 to 12 week flowering window. Cut stems in the morning when flowers are just opening. Ranunculus hold well in the vase for 7 to 10 days and continues to open and develop after cutting. Regularly harvesting the blooms actively encourages the plant to produce more flowers. Remove spent flowers from garden plants to extend the blooming period.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Excellent. Autumn planting and cool winters produce the most flower-laden plants with the most vivid, long-lasting colour.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Outstanding. Ranunculus is perfectly suited to temperate Australian conditions and is one of the most rewarding winter-spring bulbs for this climate zone.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Good. Plant in April to May in subtropical areas for a late winter to spring display. Select the sunniest, best-drained position available. Elevated subtropical regions produce the best results.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Limited. Ranunculus can be grown with difficulty in the cooler dry season months in tropical areas, but performance is variable. Not generally recommended for hot, humid tropical conditions.

Important Warnings

Ranunculus corms are toxic if ingested in large quantities by humans and animals. All parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and roots, contain protoanemonin, which can cause mouth irritation, nausea, and digestive upset. Wear gloves when handling corms as sap may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Keep all corms and plant material away from children and pets. Seek medical or veterinary advice if ingestion is suspected.
