Description
Zephyranthes Autumn Raindrops (Pack of 5 Bulbs)
Zephyranthes sp.
Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.
Zephyranthes Autumn Raindrops, commonly called rain lilies, deliver one of nature's most reliable seasonal spectacles: masses of cheerful funnel-shaped blooms appearing just days after the first significant autumn rains. The blooms are soft blush-pink to rose, held upright on slender stems above low, grassy foliage, and their sudden appearance after rain makes them a genuine talking point in any garden. These small, hardy bulbs are perfect for naturalising and require almost no care once planted.
Zephyranthes bulbs originated in the Americas and are exceptionally well suited to the warm-to-subtropical climate zones of eastern Australia. They thrive in garden beds, rockeries, and container plantings, and are particularly effective massed along pathways or lawn edges where their rain-triggered flowering can be observed and appreciated. Over time they multiply freely to form dense, flower-filled clumps.

Planting Instructions
Plant Zephyranthes bulbs in late summer or early autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Set bulbs 5 to 8 cm deep and 8 to 10 cm apart. For a naturalised effect, plant in irregular drifts of ten or more bulbs. Zephyranthes are tolerant of most soil types provided drainage is adequate. In heavier clay soils, raise the bed or amend with coarse grit to prevent waterlogging during the summer wet season.
Watering and Care
The flowers of Zephyranthes are triggered by a sudden drop in soil moisture followed by rain, so the classic approach is to allow soil to dry somewhat during summer dormancy, then let the first autumn rains do the work. Supplemental watering can mimic this trigger during dry autumns. Once established, these bulbs are highly self-sufficient and rarely need fertilising, though a light feed with a balanced bulb fertiliser in early autumn can improve flowering in established clumps.
After Flowering
Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering. The fine, strap-like leaves will persist through winter in warmer climates. Bulbs can be left undisturbed for many years to naturalise, or clumps can be divided every three to four years in late summer to spread them through the garden. Zephyranthes are largely pest and disease-free, making them an excellent low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners.
Climate Zone Guide
• Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Marginal - protect from hard frost; grow in a sheltered, warm microclimate
• Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Reliable performer with good drainage
• Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Ideal - thrives in warm, humid conditions with seasonal rainfall
• Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Can perform well with dry season dormancy
Important Warnings
All parts of the Zephyranthes plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep bulbs stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling bulbs as the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
