Planting Instructions
Plant Anemone corms in autumn between March and June for a vibrant spring flowering display. Before planting, soak corms in lukewarm water for 2 to 4 hours to rehydrate them and encourage faster establishment. Choose a position with full sun to partial shade and excellent drainage. Plant corms 5 to 8 cm deep with the pointed side facing down, or if unsure of orientation, plant them on their side and they will self-correct during growth. Space corms 10 to 15 cm apart to allow for healthy spread and good air circulation. Water the well after planting, and let natural rainfall manage moisture through the cooler months.
Watering and Care
Anemones prefer evenly moist soil during their active growing and flowering period. Natural rainfall is generally sufficient through autumn and winter in most regions, but during dry spells keep the soil lightly moist to support strong stem and flower development. Good drainage is essential at all times, as corms sitting in wet soil are highly susceptible to rot. Once flowering is complete and foliage begins to die back, reduce watering and let the corms dry out naturally during the warmer months.
Pruning Advice
Anemones are outstanding cut flowers with a vase life of 7 to 10 days. For the longest lasting blooms, cut stems at an angle at the base early in the morning just as the buds begin to open. Regularly removing spent flowers throughout the blooming period encourages the plant to continue producing new blooms and extends the overall flowering season. Do not remove the foliage until it has fully yellowed and died back naturally, as the leaves are essential for replenishing the corm's energy reserves and supporting a strong return the following season.
Climate Zone Guide
Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Excellent results. Anemones thrive in cool to cold winters and produce vigorous, richly coloured blooms in spring. Corms naturalise well in these conditions and return reliably each year.
Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Outstanding performance and one of the most reliable spring-flowering corms for temperate Australian gardens. Plant in a sunny, free-draining position for the best display.
Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Good results are achievable in cooler microclimates with well-drained soil and a full sun position. In areas with mild winters, consider pre-chilling corms at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 4 to 6 weeks before planting to encourage stronger and more consistent flowering.
Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended. Anemone coronaria requires cool winter temperatures to perform reliably and will struggle to establish or flower in consistently warm conditions.
Important Warnings
All parts of the Anemone plant, including corms, stems, leaves, and flowers, contain toxic compounds and are mildly to moderately toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and other animals. Contact with the sap can cause skin irritation and mild dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Always wear gloves when handling corms and wash hands thoroughly after planting. Keep corms stored safely away from children and pets at all times. Avoid planting in areas with unsupervised access by animals or young children. If ingestion is suspected, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
