Grab Bag - Jonquil Mixed (Narcissus jonquilla hybrids, mixed varieties)

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

If there is one spring bulb that Australians grow for pure, unfiltered joy, it is the jonquil. Sweet-scented, generous, and completely at home in the Australian climate, jonquils have been a fixture in southern Australian gardens for generations, naturalising freely in lawns, cottage borders, rockeries, and beneath deciduous trees with almost no intervention at all. The Grab Bag Jonquil Mixed is a curated selection of mixed jonquil varieties assembled to deliver the full range of what this beloved bulb group offers.

The mix draws from classic and contemporary Narcissus jonquilla hybrids, spanning single and multi-flowered varieties in colours ranging from pure golden yellow and warm butter-cream through to white-petalled types with small yellow or orange cups. Each variety in the bag has been selected for its fragrance, reliability in Australian conditions, and naturalising performance. Some varieties in the mix will carry three to six flowers per stem, filling the garden with wave after wave of sweet, lingering perfume from late winter through spring. Others contribute larger individual blooms on taller stems for cutting. Together, the mix provides a long, sequential flowering window and a range of heights and flower forms that look beautiful planted together in a naturalistic drift.

Planting Instructions

Plant jonquil bulbs in autumn between March and June for a late winter to spring display. Jonquils are among the most forgiving and adaptable of all spring bulbs and will perform in a wide range of soil types as long as drainage is adequate. Plant bulbs 8 to 10 cm deep with the pointed end facing upward, spacing 8 to 10 cm apart. For a naturalistic cottage effect, scatter the bulbs loosely across the planting area and plant each where it falls, creating informal clusters rather than straight lines. Jonquils naturalise particularly well beneath deciduous trees, in lawn drifts, along garden pathways, and in rockeries where they can be left undisturbed year after year. Water in gently after planting.

Watering and Care

Jonquils are more drought-tolerant than most spring daffodils and thrive in the natural rainfall patterns of Australian temperate winters with very little supplemental watering. During extended dry spells in autumn, water lightly to assist root establishment in the first season. Once established, jonquils largely look after themselves. Avoid waterlogged positions at all times, as persistently wet soil is the primary cause of bulb failure. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back completely and naturally before removing. In lawn naturalisations, delay the first mow until the foliage has fully yellowed, generally by late November to early December.

Pruning Advice

Jonquils produce outstanding fragrant cut flowers, and regular picking actively encourages the plant to produce more stems throughout the season. Cut stems in the morning when the first flower on each stem is just beginning to open, as the remaining buds will continue to open sequentially in the vase over the following week. A bunch of freshly cut jonquils will fill a room with their distinctive sweet perfume for seven to ten days. Remove spent flower stems from garden plants promptly to keep the planting tidy and to redirect energy back into bulb development. Do not cut or tie back the foliage after flowering, as it must complete its full growth cycle to recharge the bulbs for the following season.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding. Jonquils thrive in cold Australian conditions and naturalise readily, building into increasingly generous clumps with each passing season. Cool nights intensify the fragrance and extend the flowering period considerably.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Excellent. Jonquils are among the most reliable and low-maintenance spring bulbs for temperate Australian gardens. Once established, a well-planted jonquil drift requires almost no annual attention and improves every year.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Good to very good. Jonquil-type narcissus have naturally lower chilling requirements than large trumpet daffodils and often flower reliably in mild subtropical conditions without pre-chilling. For best results in warmer subtropical areas, pre-chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 4 to 6 weeks before planting. Elevated subtropical regions such as the Darling Downs and Granite Belt produce consistently excellent results.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended for outdoor planting without cold treatment. Jonquils perform better in warm climates than standard trumpet daffodils, but still require a defined cool period to initiate reliable flowering in the hottest regions.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Jonquil plant, including the bulbs, stems, sap, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. The bulbs carry the highest concentration of toxic alkaloids and must never be confused with edible bulbs such as onions or shallots. Wear gloves when handling bulbs and wash hands thoroughly after planting. Keep all bulbs and plant material securely away from children and pets at all times. If ingestion is suspected, seek immediate medical or veterinary advice.
