Description

Jonquil Silver Chimes (Pack of 5 Bulbs)

(Narcissus tazetta)

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

Jonquil Silver Chimes is an award-winning heirloom variety that has been captivating gardeners since its introduction in 1914. Treasured for its delicate beauty and sweet, lingering fragrance, this elegant jonquil produces graceful clusters of nodding blooms that bring a touch of sophistication to any garden setting. Whether planted in borders, naturalised under deciduous trees, or grown in containers, Silver Chimes is a reliable and rewarding performer across a wide range of Australian climates.

Each strong stem carries up to ten dainty flowers featuring broad, silvery-white petals and a small, primrose-yellow cup. The soft colour palette creates a luminous, almost ethereal display that pairs beautifully with other spring-flowering bulbs and perennials. The slender, rush-like green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the cascading blooms. As a member of the Tazetta group, Silver Chimes produces multiple flowers per stem, offering generous displays with relatively few bulbs. Its strong stems also make it an excellent choice for cutting, bringing fragrance and beauty indoors.

Planting Instructions

Plant Jonquil Silver Chimes bulbs from March onwards once the soil has cooled, giving the bulbs time to establish strong root systems before winter. In warmer regions, delay planting until late April or May after the summer heat subsides. Select a position in full sun to partial shade that is sheltered from strong winds. A warm, sunny spot is ideal for this variety. Plant bulbs 12 to 15 cm deep and space them 10 to 15 cm apart in well-drained, organically rich soil. In warmer climates, plant up to double the recommended depth to keep bulbs cool and reduce premature splitting. Water thoroughly after planting to encourage root development.

Watering and Care

Water bulbs after planting and then hold off until foliage emerges, unless experiencing extremely dry conditions. Once buds appear, provide a weekly deep watering to support strong bloom development. Jonquils prefer soil that drains freely and will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. After flowering, apply a commercial bulb fertiliser to replenish the bulb's energy stores. Allow the foliage to die back naturally before tidying the garden bed. This resting period is critical for the bulb to build reserves for next season's flowers.

Pruning Advice

Deadhead spent blooms promptly to redirect the plant's energy away from seed production and back into the bulb. Leave the foliage in place until it has yellowed and withered completely. This may take several weeks after flowering, but removing it prematurely will weaken the bulb and reduce next year's bloom quality. Silver Chimes naturalises readily, forming attractive clumps over time. Divide congested clumps every three to four years after the foliage has died back. Lift the bulbs carefully, separate the offsets, and replant in freshly prepared soil.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Performs well with reliable spring flowering. The cold winter dormancy suits this variety.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Ideal conditions for Silver Chimes. Expect generous, repeat flowering year after year.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Adapts well to warmer conditions. Jonquils generally outperform standard daffodils in subtropical areas. Plant deeper for best results.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Jonquil Silver Chimes plant, including bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers, are toxic if ingested by humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep bulbs stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling bulbs as the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
