Description

Tulip Saigon (Pack of 8 Bulbs) (Tulipa Saigon)

Please Note: These bulbs cannot be shipped to Western Australia or Tasmania due to biosecurity restrictions.

Exotic, textural, and thoroughly arresting, Tulip Saigon is a fringed tulip of remarkable character that brings something genuinely different to the spring garden. This pack contains 8 premium Tulipa Saigon bulbs, each producing a bold flower in warm shades of orange, apricot, and flame, distinguished by petals edged in a delicate crystal-like fringe that catches the light and adds a jewel-like texture to the bloom. The fringed tulip classification places Saigon among the most decorative and unusual of all tulip types, and the warm colour palette makes it a standout performer in mixed spring container displays, cutting gardens, and bold border plantings.

Planting Instructions

Plant tulip bulbs in late autumn between May and June. Fringed tulips, such as Saigon, are best positioned in a full-sun location with excellent drainage and fertile soil. Plant each bulb 15 to 20 cm deep with the flat base facing down and the pointed tip upward, spacing 10 to 15 cm apart. In subtropical and warmer temperate regions (Brisbane and above), pre-chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks before planting. Store refrigerated bulbs well away from apples and other ethylene-producing fruit, as ethylene gas destroys the flower embryo inside the bulb.

Watering and Care

Water in after planting and allow natural rainfall to provide moisture through the cooler months. Avoid waterlogging at all costs; fringed tulips are particularly susceptible to fungal rot in poorly drained soils. A balanced bulb fertiliser at planting time supports strong stem development. Tulips are best treated as annual plants in most Australian conditions, with fresh bulbs replanted each autumn for the most reliable flowering.

Note: Wear gloves when handling tulip bulbs. The fine hairs on the outer skin can cause tulip fingers, a mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Wash your hands thoroughly after planting.

Pruning Advice

Tulip Saigon's fringed, exotic-looking blooms are exceptional in cut flower arrangements and vase displays. Cut in the morning when buds are just beginning to open. Fringed tulips often have a slightly longer vase life than standard tulips when cut correctly. Remove spent flowers from garden plantings promptly. As tulips are treated as annuals in most Australian regions, foliage can be cleared once it has fully yellowed.

Climate Zone Guide

Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Excellent. Fringed tulips perform magnificently in cool Australian conditions, with Saigon producing large, richly coloured blooms with well-defined fringing.

Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Good to excellent with adequate chilling. Pre-chill for 4 to 6 weeks in warmer temperate areas. Plant in full sun with sharp drainage.

Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Possible with 6 to 8 weeks pre-chilling. Treat as annuals. The warm colour palette of Saigon suits the vibrant subtropical aesthetic well.

Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended for outdoor planting without sustained artificial cold treatment.

Important Warnings

All parts of the Tulip plant are toxic to humans and animals if ingested. Bulbs are the most toxic part. Keep all tulip material away from children and pets. Wear gloves to avoid skin irritation when handling. Wash your hands thoroughly after planting. Seek medical or veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected.
