Planting Instructions
Plant tulip bulbs in late autumn between May and June. Choose a sunny, well-drained position and plant bulbs 15 to 20 cm deep, flat side down, pointed side up, spacing 10 to 15 cm apart. In subtropical regions (Brisbane and above), pre-chill bulbs at 4 to 7 degrees Celsius for 6 to 8 weeks in the refrigerator before planting. Keep refrigerated bulbs away from fruit, particularly apples, as ethylene gas from ripening fruit destroys the flower embryo inside the bulb.
Watering and Care
Water in after planting and rely on natural rainfall through the cooler months. Avoid overwatering or waterlogged conditions. Tulip bulbs are highly susceptible to fungal issues in wet soil and need sharp drainage to thrive. A balanced bulb fertiliser at planting time supports strong stem and flower development. Most Australian gardeners treat tulips as annuals or biennials, replanting fresh stock each season for the best results.
Note: Wear gloves when handling tulip bulbs. Fine hairs on the outer skin can cause tulip fingers, a mild contact skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
Pruning Advice
The Valentine Blend produces excellent cut flowers across a range of warm pinks and reds. Cut stems in the morning when buds are still closed for the best vase life. Remove spent flowers from garden plants promptly. As tulips are generally treated as annual plantings in Australian conditions, foliage can be removed once it has yellowed fully.
Climate Zone Guide
Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands): Outstanding. Natural winter cold ensures strong dormancy and excellent flowering across all varieties in the blend.
Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, coastal NSW): Good to excellent results. Pre-chill in warmer temperate areas for 4 to 6 weeks to ensure reliable flowering.
Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Achievable with pre-chilling for 6 to 8 weeks. Treat as annuals. Select the sunniest, best-drained position available.
Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended without sustained artificial cold treatment.
Important Warnings
All parts of the Tulip plant are toxic if ingested by humans and animals. Bulbs are the most toxic part. Keep all tulip material away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling to avoid skin irritation. Wash hands thoroughly after planting. Seek medical or veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected.
